Athirty-year-old farmer, Gideon Segun, has allegedly killed his grandfather-in-law, Kayode Adejuwon, 82, in the Araromi area of Iperindo in Atakunmosa East Local Government Area of Osun State, for encouraging his wife to jilt him.

Segun, popularly known as Akilapa, was said to have picked quarrel with the octogenarian and engaged him in a fisticuff, which resulted in the old man being seriously injured and later gave up the ghost.

Realising what had happened, the suspect was sad to have taken to his heels after committing the crime, but he was later apprehended by the operatives of a local vigilance group, who handed him over to the police.

Segun, popularly known as Akilapa was later moved to the police headquarters in Osogbo where he was paraded by the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye.

According to the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, the suspect, who also lived in Iperindo with the victim, had hit the octogenarian with firewood, which inflicted a severe injury on him.

Adeoye said that the old man was later found lying unconscious in a pool of blood in his room at D9, OmiOsun Street, Iperindo.

The police boss added that Pa. Adejuwon died a few hours later.

He said, “On 29th March, 2017, at 4:15pm, a 50-year-old man, Adegoke Adejuwon of Araromi area of Iperindo came to one of our stations in Ilesa to report that on the same date at 10:30am his father by name, Pa Kayode Adejuwon, was seen inside his room very unconscious and speechless in his pool of his blood and that he gave up the ghost few hours later.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that one Gideon Segun hit the deceased’s head with firewood, which gave him severe injuries. There had been previous misunderstanding between the suspect and the deceased, who was his grandfather-in-law. A team of combined policemen and vigilantes embarked on search efforts for the suspect, who took to his heels after the ugly incident.

“He (Segun) was eventually arrested and brought to the station. Irate mob threatened to kill the suspect but timely intervention of our men rescued him before he was taken to Ayeso police station.

“ Asked why he killed his grandfather-in-law with firewood, Segun told our correspondent that a hot argument had ensued between the two of them over his marriage to Pa Kayode’s grand daughter.

The suspect claimed that the deceased had confronted him while returning from his farm at Iperindo and picked a fight with him while asking him to divorce my wife and leave the town.

Segun added that the deceased used to collect a bottle of wine and other gifts every December since the past three years he married his wife, but he was surprised he had recently asked the lady to leave him after giving birth to two children.

He said he never planned to fight Pa. kayode not to talk of causing his death, saying that the deceased held on to his cloth and he had to forcibly free himself from him.

“Since I got married to my wife, it has been one problem or the other from my grandfather in-law. Although I did not pay my wife’s bride price, I did other marital rites like buying of wine and other items for her family, which they collected. In fact, every December, I ensure that I give Pa Kayode a bottle of wine.

“Ever since he started fighting me and asking me to leave her granddaughter, there has not been peace in my family. My wife always goes out and cones back in the night and when I try to confront her, she would pick up a fight with me. There was a time that we fought and she invited the police to arrest me.

“She has since left me and I heard that she is now with another man. And despite this, Pa Kayode would not allow me breathing space. He said I should leave the town and that I am making her granddaughter not to concentrate on her new husband.”
