Following the recent upgrading of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to a university, the members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics in the institution have appealed to the administration of Governor Ibikunle Amosun not to send them packing yet.
ASUP urged the state government to give its members the option to either continue to work at the new polytechnic to be sited in Ipokia or the new university.
The ASUP members also requested for a moratorium to upgrade themselves to the level of university lecturers.
MAPOLY was recently upgraded by the state government to a University of Science and Technology.
In a communique jointly signed by its Chairman, Kola Abiola and General Secretary, Adeleke Adebayo, ASUP demanded to be given adequate representation in the technical or transition committee on the upgrading of the institution to a university.
It also sought the assistance of the state Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, to arrange how its members would meet with the state governor on the development.
While congratulating Governor Amosun on the landmark achievement recorded in his tenure, ASUP lauded his administration for fulfilling its promise to upgrade the school to a university.
The communiqué partly reads, “Our union executive appeals to the governor through the Honorable Commissioner (Modupe Mujota) to allow members of the Academic Staff Moshood Abiola Polytechnic an option of where they want to go between the new polytechnic and the university.
“A moratorium be given within which the academic staff would upgrade themselves to the requirement of university lecturers.
“The Congress, as a fallout, is requesting from the government that the union should be given adequate representation in the technical/transition committee on the new upgrading, as there are grey areas to be resolved.”
