Aformer member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Mba Ukaha, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari should personally address Nigerians on his health status, the state of the economy and his plans to move the country out of the current recession.

Ukaha, who represented Ohafia South State Constituency, said that the current situation in the country necessitated President Buhari himself to give Nigerians detailed explanation and information on his health and other issues affecting the country.

The former lawmaker stated this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

Ukaha said such explanations would erase doubts in the minds of the people about the President’s capacity to continue in office and that of the All Progressive Congressled government to address the c h a l l e n g e s confronting the nation.

He expressed worry that the failure of both the President’s and government’s spokespersons to adequately explain his health status to Nigerians and other stakeholders, had further worsened the economic situation.

The former lawmaker disagreed with the government that the economic challenges in the country were as a result of alleged mismanagement of the economy by the past Peoples Democratic Party-led government.

“They are just trying to pass the buck. When former president Goodluck Jonathan handed over power to Buhari, petrol sold at N87.00 per liter, a bag of rice was between N7, 000.00 and N8, 000.00,” he argued.

The former chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties and Electoral Maters said he could go on enumerating areas the government had failed to deliver on its campaign promises.

“It is just bad implementation of programmes. And you know as the saying goes, a bad workman always quarrels with his tools. So, I am not sure the situation was caused by that government,” Ukaha said.

He agreed with the former president that the people, having experienced the failure of the APC government, would return the PDP back to power in 2019 if it puts its house in order in good time.

“If you watch what is going on in the country, you will observe that the people are disenchanted with the performance of the government. I am very optimistic that they will not allow it to continue,” he said.

Looking back at his tenure in the House, Ukaha described it as eventful, adding that besides contributing in making quality laws for the governance of the state, he touched the lives of his constituency positively.

According to him, the impact he made included the delivery of democracy dividends, training and empowering of 128 people in various skills and offering of scholarships to 48 university and polytechnic undergraduates.
