Following a continuous rise in cases of criminal activities across Nigeria, parents have been advised to query the source of their children’s wealth as part of several measures for improved security in the country.

The admonition was given by the Osun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, while responding to questions recently in Osogbo.

Opalola counselled adults to pay closer attention to the movement, activities, and actions of their wards and younger ones in a bid to help security operatives make the society safer.

“Some children buy expensive gifts for their parents, who fail to question their sources of wealth. Parents should question sudden, unclear and unexplained wealth instead of celebrating it,” she said.

According to the police spokesperson, every member of the society has a role to play in the fight against abductions, robbery, fraud, corruption, and other criminal activities in the country.

The PPRO maintained that the nation would be safer when parents, guardians and other stakeholders begin to probe how people around them suddenly make money without any concrete legitimate handiwork.

“Responsible parents are expected to query their children or ward whose source of wealth appears disproportionate to the known lawful income they claim to have.
“They must investigate if property, vehicles and gadgets bought by their children are not proceeds of crime.

“The basis for this is to properly establish their true asset base and their linkage or otherwise to any act of corruption,” she stressed.

Opalola further noted that criminals in Nigeria would have no hiding place if citizens with new found wealth were compelled by their family members, friends, and associates to disclose the source of their income.

“This step will improve the ability of security agents to check the financial crimes in the country,” she added.
