The police in Ogun State have arrested a 43-year-old man, Adebisi Akinrinmola, for allegedly killing one Ademola Asimiyu, 36, over a woman.
The incident occurred on Sunday at about 3.00pm at Ajebo Village in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect claimed that the deceased had been threatening him for quite some time now over a woman he was dating.
He said the deceased accused him of snatching the woman from him and had been warning him to leave the woman.
Trouble, however, started when the deceased met the suspect with the said woman on their way from the farm and a hot argument ensued between the two men.
The suspect claimed that it was the deceased who brought out a cutlass and attempted to attack him, prompting him to quickly shoot him with a dane gun.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said that a distress call was made to the police at the Ijebu-Igbo Divisional Headquarters, and the Divisional Police Officer, Superintendent Agene James, led detectives to the scene, where the suspect was promptly arrested and the dane gun recovered.
Oyeyemi, an assistant superintendent of police, said that the body of the deceased had been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.
He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered that the suspect be transferred to Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
The police commissioner, therefore, warned residents of the state of consequences of jungle justice, stressing that the law would deal decisively with anyone caught taking laws into his own hand.
He described the incident as a barbaric one, which was not acceptable in any sane society.
