Some principals of secondary schools in Ebonyi State have identified some challenges facing secondary schools in the state for easy interventions.

The State President of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mr Emmanuel Chukwu called on the Nigerian government to redesign the secondary school curriculum to guarantee effective teaching and learning.

Chukwu made this known in Abakaliki during an education stakeholders meeting at Urban Model Secondary School in the capital city.

He pointed out that some schools lack structures while some that have more than enough have limited students to occupy the structures.

He also listed lack of science equipment, persistent exodus of teachers and lack of school supervision as other problems confronting secondary education in the state.

On his part, Ngene Martins, Principal of Comprehensive Secondary School Oshiri, Onicha Local Government Area of the state, explained that the problems in the secondary education system started when education became instrument of politics and advocated for modification of salaries as disciplinary measure in the system to help in tackling the problems.

Chairman of Secondary Education Board in the state, Mrs. Lilian Nwankwo noted that the meeting was part of the board’s fact-finding strategies to turn around secondary education in the state to be responsive to the needs and demands of the 21st century.

“Last, week, we went on monitoring and I must confess that what we saw across the state were quite discouraging.

“In most of the schools visited, more than 60 per cent of the teachers were not in attendance; many did not write lesson notes; while those written were not marked. Diaries and class registers were not updated, amongst other deficiency that can adversely affect effective teaching and learning, this is not acceptable.

“It has to be noted that observing such aspects of the job constitutes practical evidence of our commitment to duty, and vice versa,” she stated.
