The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old lawyer, Ekere Sunday Ebong for allegedly assaulting his wife.

In a video that had gone viral, the suspect was seen beating his wife, and dehumanised her, leading to various grievous injuries.

He was accused of being a habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife over the years.

“As an Agency saddled with the protection of lives and property and maintenance of law and order, we cannot allow Barrister Ebong to continue this flagrant abuse of human rights, hence, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi ordered the arrest of the suspect to prevent murder and breakdown of law and order.

“The CP has warned perpetrators of violent crimes in the state to desist forthwith while urging family members to endeavour to resolve disputes amicably rather than resorting to violent attacks”, a statement signed by SP Odiko MacDon, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command stated.

The statement further pointed out that Ebong would be arraigned as soon as investigation is concluded.

Ebong was captured in the video mercilessly brutalizing his wife over the issue of a key in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The attack, which occurred at night, left the woman bleeding profusely from her mouth.

In the video, the couple’s neighbours were seen confronting the man as he attacked his wounded and half-naked wife on their street.

It was unclear what transpired between the couple but the man could be heard repeatedly asking his wife to give him the key.

According to one of the neighbours, the man has been beating his wife every day for the past four years.
