Parents and relations of the students and staff members abducted from the Nigerian Turkish International College, Isheri, Ogun State, are worried that drastic action had yet to be taken in spite of assurances by security agents, almost a week after the incident.
They have, therefore, continued to bombard the office of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, with incessant phone calls daily, demanding quick action. A source close to the IGP told our correspondent that his boss had said that “he receives nothing less than 1,000 calls on the matter daily.”
Three students, three female supervisors, a female cook and a female teacher of Turkish nationality, were taken away by the armed abductors from the school. Relatives and parents alike have, however, continued to mount pressure on the security agents saddled with the responsibility of liberating the kidnapped students and workers.
Presidency had, almost immediately after the incident, directed a formation of a joint security build up at Isheri, Ogun State, for the rescue of the eight people confirmed to have been kidnapped from the school.
But two suspected masterminds of the abduction were on Wednesday arrested by the police in Warri, Delta State, by operatives of the InspectorGeneral of Police Intelligence Response Team, led by ACP Abba Kyari.
Our correspondent gathered that since the incident, the office of the Inspector General of Police had been receiving over a thousand telephone calls daily concerning the kidnapping incident at NTIC.
Sources at the Abuja Louis Edet House said that the development had apparently spurred the IGP to order his special investigators under the IRT to ensure the liberation of the abducted victims within a record time.
Security agents from the Directorate of State Security Services, the Rapid Response Squad headed by one Disu, and others from the Nigerian Navy, Army and Air Force lately were also said to have formed another team for the rescue mission, after comparing notes on how best to approach the issue.
The carefully selected officers are said to be making use of tracking equipment, Gun Mounted Patrol boats and Aerial Patrol Helicopters, among other security gadgets, to track the kidnappers and the victims.
The Search Rescue Team is also said to be combing the coastal areas of Arepo, Ikorodu, Ijebu-Ode axis and some other waterways suspected to be the hideout and operational base for the kidnappers A source close to the investigators said, “The Rescue Team was making a remarkable progress but the officers are being careful because of the safety and well-being of the victims”.
The source added, “The scope of investigation has been extended beyond Lagos and Ogun. We are on top of the matter”. Also speaking, the Zonal Police spokesperson for Lagos and Ogun states, Muyiwa Adejobi, told our correspondent that there was no cause for alarm.
