- Agency evacuates N242.3m substandard products from Nigeria
The Consumer Protection Council has disclosed that it has resolved 4,000 out of the total 5,000 complaints it received across various sectors in 2016.
The resolved cases, which led to redress, to the tune of N2.5 billion, were more from consumers of electricity, who were victims of unsatisfactory services.
The amount included foreign currencies of $31,948 and 1,406 Euros, recovered for aggrieved consumers who complained to the council.
The Director-General of CPC, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, who announced the feat while presenting the council’s 2016 Annual Report in Lagos recently, admitted that more Nigerians had
become aware of the operations of the council in 2016 when compared with the previous years.
Atoki, however, insisted that there was still room for improvement on the agency’s performance, citin an instance where an MTN subscriber who won N2 million in the company’s promo was paid by the network provider only N150,000.
According to her, the victim was merely grumbling before a relative encouraged him to report the case to the CPC and the agency swung into action. She said, “Contrary
to the allegation leveled against him by the subscriber that he was dubious, we ensured the balance of N1.850 million was paid the man within two days. Since then, a lot of Nigerian companies have learnt to give their consumers value for their money.”
