Local car dealers in Nigeria have appealed to the Federal Government to reverse the ban on the importation of vehicles from neighbouring countries. Some of the car dealers, who spoke with The Point, expressed their resentment over the ban and asked the Federal Government to rescind the decision.
The FG had on Tuesday announced a ban on the importation of vehicles into the country through land borders. According to the Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, the prohibition order would cover all new and used vehicles. Adeniyi also said that the ban was sequel to a presidential directive restricting all vehicle imports
to Nigeria’s sea ports only, adding that the order would take effect from January 1, 2017.
The restriction on importation of vehicles followed that of rice, which took effect since April this year. Speaking on the ban, a vehicle dealer, Augustine Oreofe, said government should be considerate of the interest and welfare of the families whose livelihood depended solely on the importation of goods across the nation’s land borders.
