A 40-year-old man, simply identified as Mr. Felix, has been arrested by the Police in Warri, Delta State, for defiling, impregnating and aborting pregnancy for a 14-year-old girl (names withheld).
Our correspondent learnt that doctors at the Ekpan General Hospital, Uvwie Local Government Area, are currently battling to save the girl’s life following complications as a result of the abortion.
The suspect allegedly defiled and impregnated the teenager, who was kept in his care some few weeks ago and in a bid to cover up his misconduct, took the girl to a quack, who carried out an abortion on her.
The secret of his illicit conduct came to the open, when the girl fell sick and her life was in danger. She was rushed to the Ekpan General Hospital for medical care and was abandoned at the facility.
Further investigation by our correspondent revealed that to save the girl’s life, her womb was removed as a result of alleged complications from the abortion.
It took the intervention of a human rights activist, who works in the United Kingdom, Mrs. Tobore Anne, and a Warri-based human rights activist, Comrade Joe Israel, to offset the girl’s medical bill.
Tobore, who spoke to our correspondent, said someone brought the matter to her attention and she decided to investigate, adding that when she saw the condition of the girl at the hospital, she was moved to tears.
She wondered why anybody in his right senses would abandon a teenager in that kind of condition, vowing that she would go to any length to ensure that the culprit was brought to book.
“How can a man do this to a little girl? Can he do this to his child? This world is full of wickedness. The woman who supported her husband in committing this atrocity should also be arrested because she is not fit to be a mother,” she said.
On his part, Joe said, “I vow to pursue the case with everything I have. When Tobore called my attention, I had to quickly, in collaboration with her, put funds together to get blood for her and offset all other medical bills.”
He said the matter was reported to the police and the suspect had since been arrested after several days of manhunt for him.
At the police station, the suspect, who confessed to have committed the crime, told the police that it was the handiwork of the devil.
Meanwhile, when contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, “B” Division, Warri, CSP Anieteh Eyoh, declined to comment on the matter, saying investigation was still ongoing.
However, a police source told our correspondent that the suspect and all those involved would be apprehended and charged to court accordingly.
The police source further disclosed that the parents of the girl, whose identity he refused to disclose, could not even come to the police station because of their poor financial
status.
