The police in Ogun have arrested a 26-year-old man, Mathew Oguntade, for allegedly killing his wife, Mary Oguntade, 20, in the Anglican Church area of Owode-Ijako in Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on January 13, 2017 at about 01:00 am, when the couple engaged each other in a scuffle following a minor disagreement between them.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said that the Chairman of the Community, Iskilu Kareem, reported the case to the police after he received a phone call from one of the vigilante groups in the area that the couple were engaged in a serious scuffle.
Oyeyemi, a deputy superintendent of police, said that but before the CDA chairman could get to the couple’s house, the husband had strangled his wife to death, thrown her body outside through the window and had run away.
The PPRO said, “The DPO Sango Ota, SP Akinsola Ogunwale, led detectives to the scene and removed the corpse to the General Hospital, Ifo morgue before launching serious manhunt for the suspect. Their efforts paid off the following day, when the suspect was apprehended and taken to custody.”
Oyeyemi added that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had directed that the suspect be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for discreet investigation.
The police boss, therefore, appealed to members of the public to always alert the force whenever their neighbours got engaged in fisticuff to avert a recurrence of such an ugly incident.
