23-yr-old man arraigned for allegedly beating two police officers in Osun

A 23-year-old man, Boluwatife Timileyin, has been arraigned before an Ile-Ife Magistrate’s Court over an alleged assault on two male police officers.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on August 18, 2020 around 3:30 pm at Orilonise area, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said that the defendant conspired with others, now at large, to commit felony to wit: obstruction and serious assault on police officers.

He added that the defendant assaulted Inspector Ehiosun Eghonghon and Inspector Taiwo Uwague by holding their clothes while performing their lawful duty. The prosecutor also alleged that Timileyin beat up the officers.

According to him, the defendant is a suspected member of a secret society called Aye-e confraternity and was disturbing the peace of Ile-Ife.

The prosecutor stated further that the defendant conducted himself in a manner that might likely cause the breach of public peace by smoking a substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

Osanyintuyi said that the offence contravened sections 62(A), 249(d),356(3) and 508 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge.

His counsel, Samuel Obi, applied for his bail and pledged to furnish the court with reasonable sureties.

Magistrate A. A. Ayeni granted the bail of the defendant in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case till September 22 for hearing.
