Reacting to fears that President Muhammadu Buhari may not be in full support of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the Presidency has assured party members and Nigerians in general that the President will campaign for Tinubu and every candidate of the party with “full energy and conviction.”
This position was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Wednesday, titled: “President Buhari ready to campaign for Tinubu and all APC candidates with energy and conviction.”
There have been concerns across the country that, unlike the usual practice, President Buhari has not been part of presidential campaigns of the ruling party since the national launch in Jos, Plateau State, mid-November.
The Presidency, however, linked his absence at rallies to the weight of the functions and duties of the President, which the statement said would take precedence, noting that Buhari remained committed to party politics.
“This is to dispel expressed concerns in certain quarters that the President has not featured in campaigns since the national launch in Jos, Plateau State and to stress that while he remains committed to party politics, the functions and duties of the President will equally be upheld at times,” Shehu said.
Citing the President’s remarks in Washington DC, while addressing the Nigerian community, he said Buhari was ready to campaign for the party’s victory in the general elections next year.
He recalled that, speaking on the APC campaign so far, the President had said, “‘They have been impressive and of a high voltage, compared to the opposition that seems to be playing catch-up,” expressing strong optimism that the party would win all the elections fairly and squarely.
