A former member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun, Chief Bode Mustapha, has accused Governor Ibikunle Amosun of working against the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections.
He said that the actions of Governor Amosun were clearly inimical to the electoral victory of President Buhari during next year’s elections in the state.
Mustapha, who spoke with our correspondent in an exclusive interview in Abeokuta, the state capital, said that the defection of Hon Adekunle Akinlade, the anointed governorship candidate of Amosun from the APC to the Allied People’s Movement was a cleared indication that the governor was working against Buhari’s victory in the state in the forthcoming elections.
The APC, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, accused Amosun of anti-party activities with his support for Akinlade, who is currently the lawmaker representing Egbado South and the Ipokia Federal constituency in the House of Representatives to become the next governor of the state by all means.
Mustapha, who said that Amosun was not being loyal to President Buhari and the APC, accused the governor of insincerity by his decision to run for the Senate on the platform of the ruling party and refusal to support the governorship candidate of the APC in the state, Mr. Dapo Abiodun.
He stressed that the decision of Amosun to allow his own anointed candidate, Akinlade, to defect to the APM showed that the governor was indirectly working for the failure of Buhari and the APC in the state during the 2019 elections.
Mustapha, who is also the Bobagunwa of Egbaland, therefore, said that the defection of Akinlade to the APM would no doubt affect the success of the party in the state, noting that the lawmaker had the right to join another party, but not with the backing of the governor.
He said, “Nobody is blind not to see what has happened, the Genesis and where it is coming from. We all saw it and we are not surprised at all. What I find interesting is that somebody is using our party to run for the Senate and beating the drum for somebody that is running for governor in another party and he keeps saying that he is loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari. Where in lies such loyalty?”
“If he is working assiduously to see that President Buhari does not have problem in Ogun State, is he saying President Buhari should not have a governor in the state? That is anti-party activities. If it were in the days of the UPN and NPN, he would have faced the consequences.
“And if the governor thinks he is supporting President Muhammadu Buhari and if his person is now going to a party where President Buhari was assaulted and insulted, I find that irreconcilable. To say that it will not affect APC will be wrong and so becomes 10. Nine needs one and nine cannot say who is one and we have to make the best of the situation we find ourselves.”
