The people of Osun West Senatorial District have advised their representative in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to shelve his plans to contest the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
There had been speculations that Adeleke would soon publicly declare his interest in contesting the number one seat in the state in an election scheduled for September 2018.
But the constituents, under a pressure group, Osun West Peoples Assembly, claimed that some people in the state had been urging him (Adeleke) to vie for the governorship race, saying the move was not in the interest of the people of the constituency.
The group, therefore, asked the lawmaker to shun those urging him to contest the governorship of the state, saying other interested politicians in the constituency should be given the opportunity to run the race since Adeleke was already representing the district.
Rising from its meeting, the group, in a communique, signed by its Coordinator, Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, and obtained by our correspondent, urged other constituencies in the state to allow Osun West to produce the next governor of the state.
The communique said, “In the interest of justice, fair play and equity, Osun West Senatorial District should be allowed to produce the successor to the outgoing Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola. We appeal to the residents of the West Senatorial District to be resolute and focused in their bid to produce the next governor of Osun State, just as the other two districts have done in the past.”
We want Senator Adeleke to shun selfish politicians mounting pressure on him to contest the race
“We urge our representative at the upper chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to shun the antics of those urging him to contest the governorship of the state later in the year.”
The constituents appealed to Adeleke to work round the clock by ensuring that the district presents a credible and generally acceptable governorship candidate for September 22, 2018
The group further urged political leaders and gladiators from the district to close rank in their various political parties to ensure that candidates from the district emerge as their parties’ standard bearers.
Sulaiman urged the people of the district to learn from the recently conducted National Convention of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, where the South West failed to produce the national chairman of the party owing to bickering and lack of unity.
He said, “We wish to assure the good people of Osun State, especially, Osun West Senatorial District, that the district will produce the next governor of the state in the interest of justice, equity and fairness with political equation.
“As a group, we are ready to work with other concerned stakeholders to ensure the emergence of a credible and generally acceptable candidate for the plum job from the Senatorial district. We are using this medium to reiterate our appeal to Senator Ademola Adeleke to ignore the call by some selfish politicians, who are mounting pressure on him to declare intention to vie for the 2018 gubernatorial race.”
