An Upper Shariah Court sitting in Kano has ordered that an accused person, Kabiru Haruna, should receive 10 strokes of the cane for stealing two cartons of fish.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Isa Danzare, told the court that Kabiru acted in a manner that contravened the provisions of the Shariah Penal Code.

He stated that the convict was entrusted with cartons of fish but they were later declared missing.

The defendant, who told the court that the allegations levelled against him were true, pleaded for leniency.

The presiding judge, Abdul Abdullahi Waya, thereafter pronounced the sentence on the accused person.

The court further ruled that the defendant should clean a mosque and public toilet within the court’s premises.
